Well, mindfulness+fun sounds like a good time. I'd like to add something else, but I think you've hit the nail on the head, so I'll just say "right on".
I just returned from a week-long retreat, living with 21 strangers in an internet-free retreat center in Virginia. We practiced various forms of meditation, healing circles, and a little Yoga. I tried to figure out what an open "Heart Chakra" is, and also watched a 70 year-old, 85 pound woman bend a spoon with her mind (and her hands) that I couldn't bend without major effort using my own hands. Very crazy, very cool stuff.
This same woman is a Reiki Master, and when she did some stuff to try to help me with a headache, she said she had never met anyone who pulled as much energy as I did ... whatever that means.
I'm trying to think of what I learned -- other than that there are some really cool people in the world -- and it seems to come back to things like mindfulness, awareness, compassion, and also energy.
Your phrase "wide open spaces" reminds me of the Dixie Chicks: "Wide-eyed and grinning she never tired ... if these are life's lessons she'll take this test."
Peace
